OWL CLASS HOME LEARNING

Dear Parents and Carers,

During this period of school closure we will endeavour to put up some ideas and resources for home learning. This is a new thing for all of us so please bear with us as we learn together and adjust to this new way of working.

During the current Covid-19 school closure you can email Leila and Leah on owlclass@addington.wokingham.sch.uk.

We sent quite a substantial pack home last week but will add some additional activities each week.  We do not want to overwhelm you so pick out the activities your son or daughter will enjoy the most and just fit them in with your day and week.

Anything in blue is a link to a website or a resource we have created for you or your child to use.

Stay safe and all the best

Leila and Leah

Home Learning Week begin. 30/03/2020

Here are some suggested activities to try this week (they don't have to be completed on the day specified).  This week would have been healthy lifestyles week in school so we have included some healthy food themed activities.

Monday:

  • Daily exercise or physio programmes
  • Life skills challenge:

Group 1 make a glass of squash for a family member (visual instructions for squash)

Group 2 help to stir dinner

This can be used to:

Group 1

Match the fruit and veg either word to picture or picture to picture

A memory pairs game

Colour matching

Practice counting out real fruit and veg you have at home.

Group 2

Match the picture to the real fruit or vegetable inc. holding, feeling, smelling (tasting if they can) the real item. Talk about how the skin feels (hard soft rough smooth prickly) symbol sheet.

Choosing the correct fruit or veg from a choice of two using eye pointing or touch can do this with pictures or real fruit/veg.

Tuesday

  • Daily exercise or physio programmes
  • Play a simple board game with a family member (pop up pirates, hungry hippos, tumbling monkeys are popular in class so anything similar) any game where students have to take it in turns, match colour, simple counting, cause and effect.

Group 2:  use one of the Ian Bean cause and effect games on a touch screen.

  • Story or reading:

We sent home 5 reading books with the students in group 1 please read each book for two weeks as this helps to improve confidence and fluency.

Group 2 love listening to stories the funnier the better you could also use the stories on storylineonline.net below.

  • Usually during healthy lifestyles week we usually produce a whole school video of each class dancing to a song.  The song planned was 'You've got a friend in me' from Toy Story.  We would love to see your dance moves feel free to email us photos or videos of yourselves dancing to this song.  You can see my video at the top of the page!

Wednesday

  • Daily exercise  - please have a go at the exercise stations - this was sent out in the Home Learning pack. Yoga ideas were also sent home in the Home Learning pack, or please continue daily physio programmes.

Thursday

  • I hope you are enjoying the Woodland Trust activities - please try to get out in the garden as much as you can or around the woods/parks - looking at flowers, insects, sounds you can hear outside, signs of Spring.
  • Please also have a look at the following clip to look at signs of Spring: https://youtu.be/vLAnt9__5Mg  or search Britain in Spring Time BBC Teach (You Tube).

  • Another idea based on our weather sensory topic is: To make 'Storm in a Teacup' : https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/storm-in-a-teacup/  Please let me know how the students respond.
  • Group 1 - Please have a go at: 'Touch Spray' app on ipads for art with spray cans, focus on colours and mark making.
  • Group 2 - Please have a go at  'Mood Pad' - colours and cause and effect on iphone or iTouch or 'Paint melody' - colours and music, cause and effect, on the ipad.

  • Please see video uploaded above - Rainbow colours video, which will help with the signs for colours.

Home Learning Ideas Week Beginning 23/3/20

Wednesday

All of Owl Class team are wishing you all a safe time at these unprecedented times. We hope that the Home Learning packs that we sent home on Wednesday are useful. Please don't hesitate to contact Leah/Leila if you need anything and we will respond as quickly as we can and do our best to support you. Despite these uncertain times, we are still your young person's class teachers so we want to support you as much as we can. No matter what it is, we will endeavor to do our best to support you and your families - if there are any symbols or social stories that you feel you would like, please let us know and we will email them to you.

Please send any pictures/videos of any work/activities that they do and we would love to see what they have been doing. We will then be able to upload these onto our evidence capture system and we may video our feedback for them to see. We are looking at ways to deliver videos to the students so please keep checking your emails for details on this.

A creative idea for you to do this week: A lovely idea, which many schools are doing, is to draw, paint or collage a rainbow to stick up in a window at the front of their house. When families are out walking they can spot as many rainbows as they can. Like a giant neighbourhood game of eye-spy and sending out hope for everyone.

Please have a look at Live Story telling with Tara from Tiny Ts (Professional actor and puppeteer) this Wednesday at 15:00 - The Gruffalo free storytelling www.tinytsparties.com  live on facebook and instagram @ tinytsparties

Thursday

Have you had a go at the scavenger hunt in the Home Learning pack? - this would be a nice idea to do in the garden while the weather is nice. The Woodland Trust ideas in the Home Learning pack are good for getting outdoors and creative, discovering things in nature. You can do these in the garden or in the local woods/parks.

Please find below a lovely Makaton resource to learn the signs for household items and rooms, with lots of associated games and activities to play. Please print this - it is available free on the Makaton website link below until Monday 30th March.

Friday

We normally would go to Ridgeline and do horticulture, look at the changes in the garden over the weeks and spot the birds in the gardens. We have been looking at different types of birds and doing crafts and games about these. I have seen a show advertised which would fit in nicely with this topic: On Monday, a daily live show starts at 11am. Packed with games, makes, a different theme each week - Maddie Moate + Greg Foot are kicking things off with Gardens (30 mins and available on YouTube afterwards).

GardenBirds/GardenWeeks/LET'S GO LIVE with Maddie + Greg # 01

We have been exploring colours and weather as part of our sensory topic - while it is lovely weather, please make the most of the sunshine and encourage looking at the different colours in the garden, do some chalking outdoors on the patio or on paper on trays. Most importantly enjoy time together as a family.
