Welcome to the PE Department
The students of Addington have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sporting activities within their curriculum. In addition to this, lunchtime and after school clubs are well established which include football, multi-skills, golf, basketball, table tennis, badminton, volleyball, fitness and cricket among others. These provide a social outlet for our students as well as improving their skills in specific sports. This has been enhanced through professional coaching using our links with local clubs and schools such as: Reading Football Club, Sand Martins Golf Club, London Irish Rugby Club, Kingfisher Table Tennis Club, Reading Rugby Club, Berkshire Banshees Wheelchair Rugby and Goals.

All the students in Primary and Secondary/FE faculties are involved in Sports Days every year. All students participate in a series of track races and the complex needs in a sensory walk in the morning. On their sports day, secondary and FE students also participate in an inter-house competition in the afternoon. We also offer very well attended and popular inter-house competitions and these include: scooter, hockey, basketball, football, cricket, benchball, boccia, kurling, table cricket and polybat.
Teams have developed through these clubs and Addington play other schools in a range of matches and sports tournaments throughout the year. Many students of all abilities have participated in the following sports against other schools: tag rugby, football, basketball, orienteering, swimming, athletics, boccia and kurling. Every year we organise and host a Polybat Tournament for SEN students from both the local mainstream primary and secondary schools.
All abilities get a chance to participate in different competitions such as the Panathlon, Woodley Schools Sports Week and Play Unified and Berkshire School Games.
Students take part in a fitness and healthy eating week each year in March, involving activities such as a daily thirty minute workout participating in fitness circuits, aerobics, zumba and dance.
Key stage 4 & some key stage 5 classes take their second PE lessons off-site. These opportunities include gym, swimming, golf, badminton, basketball and fitness. All activities are selected to meet the needs of the individual classes and are very successful.
PE in Addington looks to new areas that the students may have an interest in and can develop further. We have a good selection of bicycles and tricycles which the students learn to cycle safely in the school grounds. The students learn how to use scooters in lessons and during lunchtime and they really enjoy it. Rebound Therapy and Hydro Therapy are both very inclusive activities particularly for our EYFS, primary and complex sensory needs students.
We promote leadership opportunities within our school. Students are selected as House Captains and they enjoy helping to run inter-house competitions, sports days and lessons.
Throughout the year the students at Addington will need a basic PE kit of shorts, coloured t-shirt and a pair of trainers. Older students will have the opportunity to have a shower after PE so will need a towel and shower gel. Students will require a tracksuit in colder weather.
