Chickenpox in School

A child in Early Years is currently away from school with a confirmed case of Chickenpox.

Vulnerable children - Some medical conditions make children vulnerable to infections that would rarely be serious in most children, these include those being treated for Leukemia or other cancers, on high doses of steroids and with conditions that seriously reduce immunity. These children are particularly vulnerable to chickenpox, if exposed to these, the parent/carer should be informed promptly and further medical advice sought.

Pregnancy - Anyone who has not had Chickenpox is potentially vulnerable to the infection.  If a pregnant woman develops a rash or is in direct contact with someone with a potentially infectious rash, this should be investigated by a doctor. Chickenpox can affect the pregnancy if a woman has not already had the infection. Report exposure to midwife and GP at any stage of pregnancy. The GP and antenatal carer will arrange a blood test to check for immunity.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week - 13-17 May 2019

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week.  Neurodiversity is the concept that neuro(brain) differences should be recognised and respected, just as any other human differences are.  These brain differences can include ADHD, Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Tourette Syndrome, Dyscalculia and many others.

This week in school we have information and posters up about some of these neurological differences, including highlighting various celebrities who have shared about living and thriving with these differences.

The following YouTube videos give examples of a few of these differences:

Tiny Cribs – help needed!

A parent has sent this message requesting empty Carte d’Or ice cream tubs and white/cream/pale yellow yarn to help with making Tiny Cribs for the RBH:

I’m voluntarily helping a nurse who works at the RBH with making tiny cribs for the babies born after miscarriages.  The cribs are knitted/crocheted and based around an empty Carte d’Or ice cream tub, which sounds awful but as you’ll see from the picture below, they do look crib-like when finished.

Any tubs could be handed to Daisy in Swan class.

Thanks, any white/cream/pale yellow yarn would also be welcomed, these colours are specified as the babies are sometimes born too soon for a gender to be identified.

The legislation around Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is changing and schools have been issued with new guidance. • The importance of the RSE education for all of our pupils
  • The reviewed RSE policy
  • Assessment tool
  • Resources

Parent running Marathon to raise money for Thumbs Up Club

Matthew Croft, the father of one of our students, will be raising money by running the London Marathon in aid of the Thumbs Up Club.  This is what he says:

"At the end of the month I will be fulfilling a long held ambition and will be running the London Marathon. I’ve done lots of half marathons, but never a full one.

I have decided to fund raise for Thumbs Up Club, who are a charity close to our heart given that Harry attends and we also know some of the fantastic people who run the Club, notably Kirsty.”

Extract about our Interns from the J&J monthly newsletter

The Pinewood, UK, team have commenced apprenticeships with five Addington School students, a special needs school that works together with charities and business to give young adults an opportunity to experience work. They have joined Catering, Post-room, Staff Shop, Maintenance and Reception to learn new skills. “We are very much grateful for having them in our team,” says Adam Coppins, Assistant Facilities Manager. “They have really excelled with us and very quickly become part of the team. It is amazing to be a in a position to offer these young people the opportunity to become independent and grow within a working environment - they have so far exceeded all expectations. Ayesha, our catering intern, has launched her own cake range from the Costa outlet, and even asked to come to work during half term.”

Pinewood has also received a super refresh in the restaurant, all supported by the new food and HF2020 branding. “We launched a fantastic street food pop-up offer ‘Planted – Oumph!’ as well,” says Joanna Siembab, Thames Valley Food Services Manager. “All Thames Valley UK sites are now running the same menu cycle across all four sites, this ticks our standardisation project. I’m looking forward to making sure we commit to it.” They also got into the romantic mood in February with a range of Valentines cupcakes across all the sites. Great news Pinewood.
