Explore - Discoverers - Dry Textures

Activity 4 - exploring dry textures

Gather some dry ingredients from around the house and garden; cereal, flour, pasta, dry leaves or sand, whatever you have! Next, find a place where you can make a mess and a tray or large bowl to put your preferred ingredients in.

Please choose the activity which works best for you!

  • Explore how the dry things feel on your skin and how you can watch them or move them around. Which ones do you like, and which ones do you not like? If you really want to make a mess and your space is big enough, why not get in there yourself! Feel the things crunching and moving underneath you as you move around.

  • Explore how you can interact with the materials; can you pick them up or pour them from a cup? Can you add different textures together and mix them around? You could try practicing using a spoon to transfer them from container to container or try to find things that are buried underneath!

  • Find or make the letters which are in your name, e.g. fridge magnets or cutting out of paper. Bury them in your container of dry materials (or get someone to hide them from you!) and then try to find them and put them in the right order.

  • Don’t forget to share what you are doing with someone! Use your voice, body language, communication book or Eye Gaze to show what you like or dislike and to ask for help if you want it. If you would like communication boards for the activities please us know.
