Activity 3 - Exploring animal sounds

Gather together any animal toys from around your house. In the story “Brown Bear, Brown Bear”, there is a bear, bird, duck, horse, frog, cat, dog, sheep and fish, but any animals you can find will be great. You will also need a device which can play sounds from the internet.

  • Explore each toy animal one by one by looking at it and touching it and listen to a clip of the animal’s noise at the same time. Let someone know if you like it or not using body language or a communication aid and see what noises you can make yourself using your voice or your body.

  • Play with each animal toy with an adult however is the most fun for you, for example peekaboo or taking turns. Listen to the clip of the animal and listen to the adult making the same noise. See if you can use your voice to make the animal noise as well, even if it takes a few tries! Do you have a favourite noise to make or one which you think is funny?

  • Go through each of your animals one by one and listen to the audio clip of their sounds. Once you are familiar with the animals, get someone to play one of the noises for you and pick which animal you think makes that noise using body language, your voice or a communication aid. You can also talk about which ones are loud and quiet, and which animal is your favourite!
