Daisy Class News

Construction – Homes and Buildings. It may be a short term but in Daisy class we have packed a lot in. We used our senses to experience the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears; touching warm and hot porridge oats, playdough, smelling woody compost and feeling the soft fluffy teddies. As part of our phonics work we have explored sounds using body percussion, percussion instruments and our voices to create sound effects for the story and songs. Through sound games, we have listened to and identified sounds in our environment such as household noises. Is that the doorbell I can hear or is it the TV?  In Maths, we had to quickly build towers from wooden blocks or large soft play cubes before they got knocked down and we explored space by crawling into cardboard box houses with the Three Bears! We have used 2D shape sponges to print bricks patterns and used different fabrics to create collage bears. Thank you to everyone who sent photos in of their families and homes. They helped us develop our Understanding of the World and the communities we live in through talking about the special people in our homes.

Growing - plants and animals - This Spring term, Daisy class have watched how the bulbs we planted back in November grew shoots and leaves until beautiful flowers appeared, in perfect time to be the children’s Mother’s Day gifts. Whilst enjoying “The Hungry Caterpillar” as our sensory story, the children have explored the different foods in the story during food play. We observed how our very own hungry caterpillars wriggled, munched and spun cocoons. Now we are waiting for colourful butterflies to emerge and fly away, just like the caterpillar song we have been singing!  With spring in the air, Daisy class decided to celebrate the Hindu festival of Colour, Holi. We celebrated with rainbow colourful lights, scarves, rice, powder paints and practised our Indian dance moves!

This term, Daisy class have been stomping, chomping, roaring and exploring all things DINOSAUR! Through our sensory story and poems, we have explored different textures, smells and tastes as our 2 legged Daisy dinosaurs have stomped through swamps of mash potato and forests of lettuce and broccoli. We have developed our gross motor skills by splashing like a Plesiosaur in hydrotherapy and stamping like a Diplodocus through the sensory garden. Signing and singing along to dinosaur number songs have been a huge hit.

This term, the children in Daisy class have explored colour, focusing on different colours each week, in a multi-sensory way. We have squeezed and squished green spaghetti, rubbed our hands in yellow grainy cornmeal and smothered ourselves in slippery orange baked beans! In our circle times, the children used their fingers to investigate colour mixing and we have been busy planting bulbs using earthy smelling, soft black compost. We have developed our gross and fine motor skills whilst tearing brown, bumpy cardboard and sorting coloured 3D wooden blocks. After all that busy-ness, we have thoroughly enjoyed chilling in our yoga sessions with Yoga Claire. We have also been as busy as Santa’s elves making special things for our grown-ups for Christmas but that’s a big surprise we know you will love!

We have been having lots of fun in Daisy class this half term. We have several new pupils so have been busy getting to know each other. We all like playing with light toys, instruments and enjoying sensory stories. We made our own special class books about our bodies, which we loved sharing altogether. We have painted with our hands, explored foam and jelly, and squeezed different scented playdough. We have sung lots of songs about our different body parts, such as ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’. Hydrotherapy has been a huge success, with all our children settling so quickly into using the pool. We have made our own little sensory area in our classroom, and we enjoy turning all the lights and bubbles on, exploring our senses and tracking. We have also loved our new sensory playground, it’s so exciting!
