Lily Class News 2021-2022

May 22

This term, we have had so much fun with our topic which was ‘Under Construction: Buildings & Homes’. We have really enjoyed sharing the following stories and using them as inspiration for our learning: ‘A Mouse in the House’, ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.

We have enjoyed our topic based food play sessions in which we have been building houses out of different foods! Our first attempt was using marshmallows and spaghetti which was much trickier than it sounded but we saw some amazing perseverance, had lots of laughter and shared our frustration when our houses collapsed for the 100th time! We also created a house made from bread as well as a fruit and vegetable house! However, some children enjoyed tasting the different foods so much, they didn’t have a very big house by the end …!

Term 4 - February - April

Lily Class have really enjoyed the ‘Spring and Growing’ topic this term!  Here is a display of some of the amazing work we have created together! We have really enjoyed sharing the following stories and using them as inspiration for our learning: ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Six Little Chicks’ and ‘We’re Going on an Egg Hunt’.

We have learnt all about the lifecycles of butterflies, chickens and frogs! We have even had 5 caterpillars in class and we were so excited to see the first one transform into a beautiful butterfly this week! We can’t wait to meet the other 4 when they emerge from their cocoons.

Term 3 - January

Lily Class have had fun with our ‘Megabeasts’ topic this term!  We started by reading and completing activities linked to the story ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson. Look at the fantastic artwork we have made!

We then moved onto the story ‘Dinosaurs Love Underpants’ by Claire Freedman, which we all thought was very funny! We have enjoyed designing our own underpants and using this theme in our maths sessions

We have learnt about Chinese New Year – making Chinese lanterns and learning about the Year of the Tiger (another Megabeast for out topic!) We also celebrated Valentine’s Day and have completed different activities based around the theme of ‘love’, which we have thoroughly enjoyed! We’ve also had lots of fun in our PE sessions with Danny.

Term 2 - October

Lily Class have enjoyed the ‘Colours and Christmas’ topic this term!  We have learnt about Diwali, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, Autumn, and Children in Needs ‘One Kind Word’.  We have completed lots of different activities based around these themes which we have thoroughly enjoyed!

We have read a selection of books linked to our topic, our favourite ones being 'We're Going on a Leaf hunt' by Steve Metzger, 'WOW! Said the Owl' by Tim Hopgood, 'Dear Santa' by Rod Campbell, and 'The Nativity'.

Decorating our class Christmas Tree as part of an Attention Autism activity, making paperchains, snowmen, party hats and gingerbread biscuits have all been highlights in our class! We’ve even written our own letters to Father Christmas! We hope they reach him in time and he puts us on the ‘nice’ list!

Lily Class have been very fortunate to visit Thames Valley Adventure Playground this term – we have all had fun on the bikes, in soft play, in the sensory room, on the outdoor equipment and in the role play areas. We are looking forward to hopefully going again in the future!

Term 1 - September

Our topic this term has been 'Marvellous Me and My World' which has covered our faces, our bodies, and our families. We have labelled parts of our bodies, sung songs about our bodies, painted and collaged self-portraits, learnt about growing up, shared photos of our families and learnt about different family members.

The children have enjoyed lots of books linked to our topic, but particular favourites were 'From Head to Toe' by Eric Carle, 'Monkey Puzzle' by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, and 'Jump on Board the Animal Train' by Lynne Moore and Naomi Kefford.

We have been working hard on our literacy skills this term. We have been doing regular phonics sessions, learning new sounds, saying the sounds, recognising the sounds and having a go at writing them! We have also had a go at lots of other sensory and mark making activities.

We have also been working on counting, recognising numbers and ordering them.  We have counted different sets of objects and have begun to add 1 more.  We like singing counting songs and playing number games on the interactive whiteboard.

We have enjoyed our weekly Music sessions with Sean and PE sessions with Danny.  We have also loved out weekly Yoga sessions with Claire, where there have been lots of opportunities for intensive interaction and the children have experienced the 7 Step Mini Me Yoga Program as well as a selection of specific POSES and planned breathing techniques.  We have also experienced a range of relaxing and and meditation techniques.

We have all thoroughly enjoyed exploring the new Early Years Playground and some of us attended the Official Grand Opening with visitors from Wokingham Borough Council – check out their social media accounts to see photos!

We hope you all have a lovely half term break!
