Sunflower news

May 22

This term Sunflower Class finally got to go on our trip to Thames Valley Adventure Playground! We were so excited to go and managed the transition and travelling on the minibus really well. We were very lucky with the weather as it was a lovely sunny day, and fully enjoyed exploring all the outdoor areas and the Soft Play and sensory room inside. The children have enjoyed exploring our topic ‘Under Construction: Homes and Buildings’ this term, especially looking at photos of their own houses and families and labelling their family members using symbols to support. We have continued to enjoy exploring a wide range of foods during our food play sessions, including some that we have explored making buildings with, like waffles and twiglets! Swimming sessions have also been a highlight this term, with more pupils exploring the pool more independently, and becoming more confident in the water.

April 22

This term we have enjoyed exploring our new topic of ‘Growing’, especially listening to the story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and exploring different foods from the story during our food play sessions. We have also enjoyed watching our real-life caterpillars go into their chrysalis and turn into beautiful butterflies before we set them free! We have explored paint using a range of tools such as paintbrushes and potatoes, as well as our hands and feet during Art sessions this term- we celebrated Holi the festival of colour by painting with lots of different colours! It was lovely to have some nice sunny weather this term, and we enjoyed lots of outdoor learning, including some water play which we loved! We’re looking forward to lots of fun Easter activities in our last week of term, including having our own Easter Egg hunt!

February 22

This term we have continued to enjoy exploring different rooms around school, especially our swimming sessions. The children are growing in confidence in the water and starting to want to swim more independently during the sessions. The children that don’t swim have been working on water confidence during water play sessions and are building up to going to Splash. They’ve been enjoying splashing in the water trays! This term our theme has been “Dinosaurs” and we’ve enjoyed exploring toy dinosaurs, listening to songs about dinosaurs, doing some dinosaur yoga with Claire and lots of dinosaur themed sensory play! We’ve also started gardening this term and have been filling pots and planting seeds with support. Our plants have been growing really well!

December 21

This term we have enjoyed celebrating and learning about a range of special events including Bonfire Night, Diwali and of course Christmas, with a range of Art activities, sensory play activities and experiences. The class have especially enjoyed decorating our class Christmas tree, hanging some baubles and tinsel on it and have been enjoying listening to and singing Christmas songs. The children have also been working really hard on their communication skills this term, using symbols, PECS, communication boards and Makaton to learn new vocabulary and communicate their wants and needs. We have also continued to visit a wide range of rooms around school and the children are now able to do this more independently as they have learnt where different rooms are.

October 21

It has been a busy first term in Sunflower Class! The children have been enjoying getting to know school and exploring all of the different rooms that we visit around school such as the Splash pool, Soft Play, Sensory rooms and of course the swimming pool! The children have been learning and getting used to their new routines at school and are doing very well! To fit with our theme of ‘Marvellous Me and My World’ we have been looking at family photos, and the children have been making choices by looking, pointing, and using their preferred methods of communication to identify photos of themselves and different family members.

September 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to the start of a new school year at Addington. We hope you all had a lovely summer holiday. The children have all made a great start to the year, settling into their new class, and getting to know their new class friends and staff. They have had a fun first week with lots of playing and exploring and are starting to adjust to our classroom routines.

Our class members in Reception and Year 1 and we are an Early Years class following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum.  Our theme for this half term is ‘Marvellous Me and My World’.

Katie is the Class Teacher, Laura is our Teaching Assistant on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and Emma is our Teaching Assistant on Fridays. Our Learning Support Assistants are Megan, Drew, Fern and Karen. We also have Lianne our lunchtime assistant to help us with our lunch.

The children will be taught Yoga and Music by Claire, on Tuesday mornings. We will be doing P.E on Thursday afternoons. We are keen to promote independence and work on life skills in Sunflower Class, so we would like all of the children to have a P.E it they can change into, so that we can work on their self-help skills. The official school P.E kit is a blue top and black shorts, but you can send in any t-shirt or shorts you already have at home for your children to change into if this is easier for you. It is often easier for the children if we start with clothes that don’t have fastenings on them, so this would be helpful too.

We will be swimming every other Wednesday afternoon and using the Splash pool on Wednesday morning on the weeks that we don’t swim so please send in a swimming kit every Wednesday. We will also be using the Splash pool on Tuesday afternoons. Please send in swimming kits for these days, and if your child wears swim nappies, please send some of these in as well.

We ask that children have a couple of changes of clothes in case of toileting accidents or messy play. If your child wears nappies, you are welcome to send these in a pack at a time if this is easier for you and then we will send home a reminder when we require another pack. Working and playing outside is an important part of the Early Years Curriculum so children need a named coat in school every day please. It is also helpful to have shoes, lunchboxes and bottles named as well.

The class email is sunflowerclass@addington.wokingham.sch.uk and is checked at least once a day during school hours, so please do use it if you ever have any questions or queries.

We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year in Sunflower Class!

Katie, Laura, Emma, Megan, Drew, Fern, Karen and Lianne.
